Topic 3: Silent Film

Significant societal changes happened in America between World War I and The Great Depression. This time period is referred to as the Roaring Twenties. After World War I, Americans were no longer focused strictly on world affairs. Instead they turned their attention to problems on the homefront.
 

The Task

You will create an authentic silent film from the 1920's. Go to this link and research the history of silent films. Also check out this link to the Silver Screen

The Process - Stage 1:

Following links below to view several clips of movies that were created during the roaring 20's. You might recognize some of the actors such as Charley Chaplin and Valentino. While viewing these clips of silent films, make sure that you take mental notes on the following: music, storyline, execution, props, lighting, acting, facial expressions etc....

The History and Process of Silent Movies- Stage 2:

Lets look at the process that we will need to be followed in order to create our "silent movie.." Answer the questions below each link.

    3. Why is it important to film some scenes from more than one angle?
  • How to Create a Silent Movie
    1. What is the role of music in silent film?
    2. List the things you will need to make a silent film.
    3. What do you have to do if you want to make a profit on your film if you use someone else's music?
  • The History of Silent Film. Write a 250 word essay on the history of silent films and the studio system. Include information on early movies and actors as well as the studios that made the movies.

As a group, pick and choose items from the links to determine your own process that you will follow to create your own movie.

Conclusion

Complete each question on the corresponding form for this WebQuest. Turn in the answers to your questions as a group. You will now produce a silent film in the style of the 1920s. Be sure the film captures the fashion and backdrop of the time period. The group must create a script and perform the skit along with filming and editing the project.

Assessment

Complete each question for this WebQuest using Microsoft Word. Your font must be Times New Roman size 12. Include the questions and your answers. Each answer must be the length of a short paragraph (5-6 sentences) and must contain facts and details.Turn in the answers for your individual grade by Friday January 7th. This will count as a test grade. You will now produce a silent film in the style of the 1920s. Be sure the film captures the fashion and backdrop of the time period. The group must create a script and perform the skit along with filming and editing the project.
